Diet.com -- Calorie Counts on the Fly

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

This is a fun one, as discussed on radio with the very gracious Wags & Elliot on Ohio's WLVQ FM last week & in on KVIL-FM in Dallas today with Gene & Julie ... Picture this: You're at one of 1700 restaurants nationwide, one of the 36,000 item menus listed has a "healthy heart" next to it. To be clear, it often has NOTHING to do with calories. If you're an old-fashion believer in calories in & calories out (simple math), this new online mobile tool may be for you.

Have tested it all week & the instant results are truly instant. They call it, "Nutrition on the GO." I call it avoid crazy mistakes ... You send text message to Diet1 (34381) -- same drill as voting on American Idol. You type in the menu item (e.g, Subway 6 inch tuna sub ...) They text you right back with key -- & frankly staggering stats -- 530 calories (imagine when you have 12 inch!); carbs 45g: protein 22g; fat 31g. Then, you can make an educated call. I'm swearing of them. Am a 6-12" veggie girl ... Not that it's anything to brag about!

Would you rather be rich or thin?

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

My colleague Maggie covered the story ... Trust me, she's thin;) This is an intriguing Woman's Day/AOL Body poll re: whether women would choose wealth over health or a great body over a full wallet. Once had discussion with high-end hair stylist re: why "thinness" is so valued. Our conclusion: cause you can't buy it.

So ... Aniston's 118lb reported weight = the Powerball equivalent.

Here's what she looks like at 218+.

Hard to peg a value on that difference ...

Food Porn Daily

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

I didn't name this site or its most popular area, but can guess why it's getting a lot of traffic ... www.slashfood.com. Regular features include food porn daily -- a look at gorgeous food photos they dare say are "sexy."

The site also features seasonal specials like "SLASHFOOD AT THE SUPER BOWL." I have my eye on the 7 layer dip, which apparently also works with 6 or 8 layers:)

Kick the Cold

Sunday, December 30, 2007

This is not the time you want to come to down with something ... for sniffles, runny noses and coughs consider referring to these sites with some home remedies: AOL Body, Home Remedies for You and the Mayo Clinic have proposed cures for everything from the Common Cold to Snoring. They all -- of course -- suggest pursuing clinical care if/as needed, which people tend to skip over the holidays.

The site 50 million people have waited for

Friday, November 16, 2007

The recently launched www.disaboom.com is the brainchild of a Dr J. Glen House who graduated from medial school after a skiing accident left him quadriplegic. The concept is getting rave reviews.

The theme: Live Forward. Can't argue with the slogan for this new site aimed at the 50 million Americans with some form of physical or mental disability. It's an under-served audience: they're growing & they have money. A potentially winning combination for an impressive website as covered by The New York Times.

They're building the largest collection of accessibility reviews on everything from restaurants to hot travel spots. They've also got relevant & timely information on health & wellness issues. The community is growing by the hour ... There are first-hand accounts of dating; suggested books for kids; search engines for job opportunities. You can even increase the font size of the site by clicking on box in top right corner.

A friend in the investment community brought this site to my attention. I hope they make a fortune & a world of difference.

Lifelines for Fire Victims

Thursday, October 25, 2007

As discussed on WSJ Radio this morning, am really impressed with the evolving role of cellphones & the Internet in emergencies. Having covered this angle around Sept 11 & the NYC Blackout + Katrina, it's striking to see carries effectively re-routing traffic; text messaging becoming a clutch application & blogs, the Red Cross "Safe & Well" database & even Twitter becoming real-time realities.

USA TODAY did a terrific round-up with some useful links:

Technology's pipeline becomes lifeline for fire victims - USATODAY.com

Swiss Firefighters as Rap Stars

Thursday, September 27, 2007

A group of Swiss Firefighters are burning up the Internet with a hit rap video. The idea came after local officials decided to change the number for directory assistance to begin with the numbers 18 ... Problem is, the fire department's emergency number is 118, leading to a huge spike in erroneous emergency calls. So, what better way to educate the public about the right numbers to dial? You got it ..... a rap video. Guess works in any language;)

In the video, featuring male & female firefighters, some are seen shaking their money maker in uniforms, while others are clad in hot pants ... Whatever gets the point across!

Check out the English translation here.

Keep a Child Alive

Monday, August 27, 2007

AIDS is a treatable and manageable disease in the U.S., thanks to anti-retroviral drugs--but in Africa, the death toll is 25 million and rising. Think about that for a second .... At Keep A Child Alive, you can join the "Dollar a Day" campaign to cover the cost of treatment for an infected child or parent.

www.KeepAChildAlive.org

Your money also goes toward building clinics and orphanages in AIDS ravaged communities. Was really touched this weekend when we walked by a related billboard in airport & my 7 year old son said, "Mom, have you seen the commercials on TV? We need to call." He's -- unfortunately -- right & am touched he noticed.
