Was away with my extended family this weekend. Am embarrassed to say, they've all done a better job of "going green" vs our home. This Neutron Battery-Powered "smart" mower might help get us over the hump, especially -- as they wisely point out -- 17 million gallons of gas are SPILLED every year by people filling or TRYING to fill their mowers. A "smart" tractor & we're in ...
This is one sure does give you an inside look at which households are writing checks to support candidates & how much they're writing them for. Looks like I've got some generous friends, neighbors & colleagues;)
These days, of course, many people aren't writing checks, they're donating online with one click. You can even sign up to give an amount on a recurring basis (i.e. $50 a month). To see who is up to this, you can search by street address, zip code, or company name.
Arianna Huffington's site is quick to point of some celebrities are playing both sides of the fence, supporting multiple candidates. And Huff Post suggests you can use this clever tool to find out if the new guy you're dating is really a Republican or just dresses like on.e Not that I would ever do such a thing;)

www.techpresident.com – How the Candidates are Using the Web & How the Web is Using Them. This site with a clever tagline tracks how the web affects the election, complete with running tallies of Facebook and YouTube popularity, as well as candidate website traffic. Lately, Obama is reportedly leaving Hillaryin the dust. This video could prove to be the TechPresident tipping point.
A new social-networking site is stirring up a bit of nostalgia in cyberspace. WereYouThere gives you a place to share memories of common experiences – from major events in history like Man Landing on the Moon, 9/11 or the assignation of JFK ... to lighter times like "Beatlemania," or Fashion Fads of the 70's. You can liven up your memories with photos and video and share them with friends and generations to come. This weekend my youngest son asked: "Mom, did you know any pilgrims when you were little?" He probably thinks I could really contribute to this site ... :) ENJOY.
Many of you may have heard me talk about www.blackvoices.com on the radio. Well-organized, thoughtful & timely, the editorial content provides a refreshing forum. Sometimes I visit the site, just to get a broader take on issues in the news. There's also some pretty eye-opening polls & no shortage of comments on hot-button issues. Today there's a social feature on Martin Luther King Jr. It's beautifully done & a few minutes on this impressive site, really helps serve as a reminder of his impact. You can read & listen to his speech. Now, in the era of online video, you can even watch it on-demand. Pull a chair over & let the kids see ...
"Service" seems to be one of those things -- if you instill in your children early enough -- becomes part of their natural orientation. I admire families who do this & think it's never too late to start. Here's a useful source: NetworkforGood.org lists hundreds of volunteer opportunities, searchable by location, organization or area of interest. There's even a feature for tracking your "volunteer record of service."
Everything featured on www.etsy.com is homemade -- from handknit blankets to handpainted furniture & handcrafted jewelry. E-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Warms my heart. High-tech meets hand-crafted.
Am going for good karma this holiday season & hope to do some holiday shopping on this truly unique site. They even have a "Geolocator" so you can search for & support local artists. If you're giving a gift, it might be especially thoughtful to pick something from the recipient's area.
Some of the headbands are amazing, though am partial to my friend Mary's ...
And, how cool is this wood block magnetic frame? I just need a cabin to put it in ...
Here's the link & some background pulled from their press area.
What is Etsy?
Etsy is an online marketplace for buying and selling all things handmade. We built it for those consumers conscious of the true value of handmade goods and their creators, as well as to give all independent artists the technology and information they need to make a living, making things. Our intention is to offer viable alternatives to mass-produced objects in the world marketplace, and to encourage consumers to be aware of the social and environmental implications of their purchases.
The connection between producer and consumer has been lost. We created Etsy to help them reconnect, and swing the pendulum back to a time when we bought our bread from the baker, food from the grocer, and shoes from the cobbler.
Our vision is to build a new economy and present a better choice: Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.
Here's a familiar name ... Goodwill. Have been going my whole life. Now, they have an e-Bay like auction site. Proceeds go to their venerable non-profit work. Can't think of a more affordable way to get your hands on some original art, used instruments, baseball cards & more while donating to important causes.
The recently launched www.disaboom.com is the brainchild of a Dr J. Glen House who graduated from medial school after a skiing accident left him quadriplegic. The concept is getting rave reviews.
The theme: Live Forward. Can't argue with the slogan for this new site aimed at the 50 million Americans with some form of physical or mental disability. It's an under-served audience: they're growing & they have money. A potentially winning combination for an impressive website as covered by The New York Times.
They're building the largest collection of accessibility reviews on everything from restaurants to hot travel spots. They've also got relevant & timely information on health & wellness issues. The community is growing by the hour ... There are first-hand accounts of dating; suggested books for kids; search engines for job opportunities. You can even increase the font size of the site by clicking on box in top right corner.
A friend in the investment community brought this site to my attention. I hope they make a fortune & a world of difference.
Wondering what you can do in your everyday life to help the planet? Check out Green Daily. It's an earth-friendly blog with an adorable logo covering all aspects of green living from tips to product reviews, news & more. What's more green friendly -- hand-washing or dishwasher? Find out here ...
A dear friend brought this site www.me4kidz.com to our attention & am so glad. If ever there was a night to have a ready-to-go, fully-loaded safety kit at home & in your car, it was probably last night. Then again, if you have my son, it's everyday & night.
Developed by a female-owned & family-operated business & made in the USA, they're widely available nationwide. Just type in your zip code to find out where. In our area, they're available at Target, Toys R Us, etc.
"Clean it, Fix it, Back to Play" is their motto. I hear ya, sister;) Useful FAQ here, including how to order in bulk.
This is clever & getting a lot of buzz ... They've even got one for pets. Now, you're ALL covered.
As discussed on WSJ Radio this morning, am really impressed with the evolving role of cellphones & the Internet in emergencies. Having covered this angle around Sept 11 & the NYC Blackout + Katrina, it's striking to see carries effectively re-routing traffic; text messaging becoming a clutch application & blogs, the Red Cross "Safe & Well" database & even Twitter becoming real-time realities.
USA TODAY did a terrific round-up with some useful links:
Planet Festo is dedicated to bringing people together to show beautiful images around the world in a ribbon-like album. Not just a site for pretty pictures Planet Festo asks everyone to pledge what they will do for mother earth. Take a look because there are some truly good shots & things worth shooting for ...
A group of Swiss Firefighters are burning up the Internet with a hit rap video. The idea came after local officials decided to change the number for directory assistance to begin with the numbers 18 ... Problem is, the fire department's emergency number is 118, leading to a huge spike in erroneous emergency calls. So, what better way to educate the public about the right numbers to dial? You got it ..... a rap video. Guess works in any language;)
In the video, featuring male & female firefighters, some are seen shaking their money maker in uniforms, while others are clad in hot pants ... Whatever gets the point across!
