Monday, September 14, 2009

Catchy title for an important new campaign from the Ad Council ... Have had them all ... Rear Facing Convertible, Foward-Facing Convertible, Booster No Back ... Though it's estimated 75% of kids are NOT secured correctly in their car seats. It's all about the fit ... Or, "LATCH."

SupportYourVet.org: Address the Elephant in the Room

Monday, June 1, 2009
The Ad Council launched a new series of national public service advertisements as part of Veterans Support Campaign. The PSAs highlight the importance of beginning a conversation with returning service men and women and direct audiences to visit a new site, SupportYourVet.org, to learn how to start a constructive dialogue. Of the 1.7 million Veterans who have served -- or are serving -- in Iraq or Afghanistan, nearly one third are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, depression or traumatic brain injury, with the number expected to increase in coming years.

The ads center on the concept of "welcome home" signs which convey the difficulty of approaching and engaging a friend or family member who has recently returned home. The site has practical conversation tips, including: keep it light, take the lead; and address the elephant in the room.

SEX + TEXTING = SEXTING

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

We're researching segment material for "The View" re: teen trends and this article caught our eye ... Think for so many years we were all so concerned about what kids were doing on the computer. The truth is, that thing in their pocket -- the cellphone -- has an awful lot of the same capability (for better or worse).

The Washington Post ran this piece re: sending nude photos on a cellphone. What's most striking is how culpable you may be if you forward that email/text. Worth a read & perhaps a dinner-time conversation ....

Entertainment Software Rating Board

We're familiar with the motion picture rating system for movies, but video games are little trickier. New site http://www.playsavvy.com/, takes some of the guess-work out of it. Here is a terrific round-up explaining the ESRB Rating system -- there are actually seven different ratings & 30 content descriptors (e.g., comic mischief, crude humor, etc.). PlaySavvy.com is a savvy site to check before purchasing a game as a gift this holiday season.

PostYourTest.com - As Seen on The Cyber Edge

Friday, November 7, 2008

As seen on FOX 5 DC's Cyber Edge, the Internet is making cramming for college exams a whole lot easier for some students. Web sites like PostYourTest.com allow students to anonymously upload copies of old tests so other students can take a peek or view actual exam questions if a professor uses the same test each semester. Much to the dismay of educators, there are currently over 500 tests on the site from schools including Harvard, Notre Dame, Rice and UCSD.

Example of one test posted on the site from Harvard.

As discussed in the workshop today at the National Caregivers Conference, you have more control than you may think when it comes to the online experience of your child's or any other person you're caring for. Safetyclicks.com has a new Safety IQ Quiz. It's one of the most helpful resources have ever seen in terms of providing tips & context.

More than half of online teens report posting specific details, including their first name and the name of their city and school - details that could prove dangerous. That's a little tip for the quiz;)

If you think your kids are too young to need to worry about this, think again. Studies show the online presence of tweens -- 8 to 12 year olds -- doubles or triples between the ages of 8 & 10 and 11 to 12. Establish house rules now, so a safe precedence is set.

"Ask My Mom the Economist"

Friday, October 3, 2008

This is one of the best round-ups have seen re: the economic baillout, what precipitated it and how the whole thing went down .... It's part of a clever feature by new site www.LemonDrop.com. Each month they ask an expert mom who is a lawyer, doctor, teacher, etc. to scribe a column. This month it's Guest Mom Brett Graff, a money reporter and former economist with the US Government.

Here is an excerpt & link to the full article:

" ... Eventually the music stopped: Home prices stopped rising; subprime borrowers couldn't pay the loans; homes went into foreclosure. Those mortgage-backed securities became near worthless. Not only did this affect the investment giants' assets, but they still owed the billions of dollars they borrowed. And it turned out to be a recipe for financial failure."
