The Ad Council launched a new series of national public service advertisements as part of Veterans Support Campaign. The PSAs highlight the importance of beginning a conversation with returning service men and women and direct audiences to visit a new site, SupportYourVet.org, to learn how to start a constructive dialogue. Of the 1.7 million Veterans who have served -- or are serving -- in Iraq or Afghanistan, nearly one third are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, depression or traumatic brain injury, with the number expected to increase in coming years.
The ads center on the concept of "welcome home" signs which convey the difficulty of approaching and engaging a friend or family member who has recently returned home. The site has practical conversation tips, including: keep it light, take the lead; and address the elephant in the room.
