Online Freebies Do Exist!

Thursday, June 19, 2008
Most of us are a bit skeptical when we see the word "free" next to anything ... we're usually left thinking, "OK where's the catch?" While it's true, there are plenty of online freebies you should steer clear of – nobody wants to sign up for anything that's going to result in mountains of spam or junk mail – but others are truly worthwhile. Here's a few favorites superstar Jeff (who helps with all our on-air & online research + writing) tracked down ... If it's free, he'll find it! Here's a few of his current favorites ...

Free Postcards via Hippopost.com
Send a postcard, they'll. pay the postage. This one was featured as a "fantastic freebie" on money saving blog WalletPop. Hippopost sends real postcards via U.S. mail to anywhere in the United States or Canada, for free. You pick the picture for your postcard – use one of theirs or upload your own image – type a message for the recipient and they'll send it out. Hippopost does place a small advertisement on the back of your postcard. They call it the evolution of direct mail. We call it a win-win.

We did check out their privacy policy (always a good idea on any site) before trying the service ourselves. While you do have to register with the site, as long as you un-check the box to opt out of receiving promotional emails from Hippopost or their partners, we don't see any red flags here.

Free software at Download.com

Computer software doesn't come cheap and while there are no shortages of free software offers online, you don't always know what you're getting and it may come with a little more than you bargained for – think viruses, spyware and the like. But CNET site Download.com guarantees it's software downloads are "safe, trusted, and spyware-free."

While most of the software available on the site does come with a price tag or is offered as "try before you buy," there are over 6500 titles offered for free. From word-processing and picture editing software, to games, social-networking add-ons and personal finance tools. Many titles come with both a CNET editors' rating and a user rating, so you have an idea how useful the software is likely to be, before you download and install it.

Watch FULL TV Episodes for free on AOL Television
Too tired to stay up to watch Conan? Missed last night's episode of CSI? AOL Television has over 9,000 full length TV episodes available for viewing for free, in their entirety, right from your computer. The site could even save you the expense of getting Tivo.

Some of the hit titles available on the site include: Family Guy, CSI, Survivor, The Office, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and Lost.
