You can "hold a day's experience in your mind," but most people are hard-pressed to recount a year.
He says the day is the natural cycle of our life & contends the cycle of light & dark is more significant than the cycle of seasons, which he points out we sometimes hardly noticing passing.
The number is also striking. Has a certain specificity vs "40 years." Russell says it has added benefit of reframing the future.
