The Internet's more than 32 million busy moms are connecting 24/7 online, with many gravitating to social-networking sites. Not just MySpace or Facebook (the one's most kids frequent as discussed on Rachael Ray). These sites have names like "MomSpace," "MomJunction," or "CafeMom." Here's a look at the Web 2.0 world for Mom.
MomSpace.com is the self-described place "where Moms help Moms." Joining MomSpace is quick and easy and it's free. When registering, provide your zip code which enables the site to deliver localized content. The main focus of MomSpace is shopping – connecting you with mom-rated businesses in your area as rated/recommended by other moms. For example, find mom approved preschools and daycare providers, cleaning services, grocery stores, restaurants, repair shops, etc. There's also a section listing job opportunities geared toward moms.
Then there's MomJunction.com, which actually looks a lot like MySpace for Moms. The concept: Build your network of moms, share tips, find support and get answers ... not just from your friends, but friends of friends. It's strength and knowledge in numbers.
For moms looking for a place to express themselves or get something off their chest, step into CafeMom.com. There's plenty of venting going on here and site visitors seem more than willing to offer up support and a shoulder to lean on. Online journals are a major focus of the site ... One recent entry starts off, "A horrible tear-filled morning" ... It's from a mom who's struggling with sending her little boy off to kindergarten. Over a dozen comments have come in, offering her comfort and a little perspective. CafeMom definitely has a bit more of an intimate feel. The site also lets users form and join groups with moms who share similar interests. Literally, hundreds of groups have formed on CafeMom. They have names like "Young Mothers," "Pregnant 2007," "Need 2 Vent," "Unperfect Moms," "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," and "Custody Issues."
You've gotta love the name – DivineCaroline.com. It's well written, beautifully designed & filled with practical stories on everything from parenting and relationships to travel and finances. Most articles are written by the site's team of experts, but it offers readers the opportunity to express themselves through personal stories and comments. One of the articles is titled, "Mom Seeks Respect." Contribute & you'll feel like a magazine writer.
