State governments are starting to address the dangers of drivers distracted by text messaging. The state of Washington passed the nation's first ban on texting while driving in May of 2007 and at least six other states including New York, California and Florida are considering similar legislation. The single best tip I've heard to help curb the temptation for DWT is to keep your cell phone/Blackberry in the back seat (out of reach) while driving. If that still doesn't work, put it in the trunk.
My dad is adamant about this. He sent everyone in the family an email re: distracted driving. He's right. My "special friend" is worst culprit!

I am at least guilty of reading emails on my Blackberry while at stop lights. While that's still probably not a great idea, I guess it's better than flying down the highway typing away. But here's the reason this can all be so dangerous: http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3378025
I can't think of anything more stupid and dangerous than driving while texting.
I can confess to having done it--in stopped traffic only--a couple of times. But I haven't done it in the last 3 or 4 years, after I came to the realization that the "recovery time" necessary to get my head back in the driving game was longer than I thought. It's not worth losing your life or, worse, causing somebody else to lose theirs over a silly text message.
We need to remind ourselves that we as a species has survived and prospered for millions of years without distractions such as these. Another 10 minutes for you to pull over won't slow down your success or the evolutionary process for any appreciable amount of time.
