Nearly 90% of Americans Support Ban on "DWT"

Tuesday, August 7, 2007
While driving and talking on a cell phone has drawn plenty of outrage from safety groups in recent years, an arguably more distracting and dangerous practice, "DWT" or Driving While Texting, is the focus of a just released survey commissioned by mobile messaging service Pinger, Inc. (which I've tested on my own cellphone) and conducted by Harris Interactive. According to the survey, 57% of us admit to "DWT" (even more of us admit to at least "reading" text messages or emails while driving). Eighty-nine percent of those polled say DWT should be banned. Most think DWT is every bit as dangerous as DWI ...

State governments are starting to address the dangers of drivers distracted by text messaging. The state of Washington passed the nation's first ban on texting while driving in May of 2007 and at least six other states including New York, California and Florida are considering similar legislation. Read more about the survey here.

The single best tip I've heard to help curb the temptation for DWT is to keep your cell phone/Blackberry in the back seat (out of reach) while driving. If that still doesn't work, put it in the trunk.

My dad is adamant about this. He sent everyone in the family an email re: distracted driving. He's right. My "special friend" is worst culprit!
